“There’s a lot more to me than guns and knives and gangs””
More recently, a project with 16/17 year olds on Intense Supervision and Surveillance Programmes (ISSP) drew together young people from Hammersmith & Fulham, Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea and Westminster to produce a video. The group examined the culture of gun and knife crime and, with members of Sixty Plus - a voluntary organisation working with older people, reflected on differing perceptions of crime and ways of communities feeling safe.
For 6 years The Video College worked with the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea’s Youth Offending Team (YOT) on a ground-breaking, crime prevention project with 10-14 year olds at risk of re-offending. Called “Chance to Change”, it was highly successful in improving school attendance, preventing re-offending and decreasing referrals back to the Youth Offending Team by the police. It explored bullying, coping with school, relationships with teachers, peers and parents, drugs, crime and the implications of re-offending. Because the videos were made by the young people themselves, it gave them a real insight into how these issues affected their lives. And that there were alternatives to what they were doing.
