We work with young people who increasingly are facing the temptation of drugs both from their peer group and because of the area they live in. By making them look hard at the problem, it gives them an insight into what they can do, and how they can take control of the situation.
In this we work alongside drug advice agencies, Youth Offending Teams, schools and, if possible, we get parents involved. Videos are often screened in schools as part of the PSHCE curriculum and in local youth clubs and community centres.“There’s a lot more to me than guns and knives and gangs”
we have regularly worked with 13-17 year olds at serious risk of entering a long–term cycle of offending and prison.
A project with 16/17 year olds on West London ISSP (Intensive Supervision and Surveillance Programme) drew together young people from Hammersmith & Fulham, Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea and Westminster to produce a video. The group examined the culture of gun and knife crime and, with members of Sixty Plus - a voluntary organisation working with older people, reflected on differing perceptions of crime and ways of communities feeling safe.
Last year we again worked with West London ISSP on the successful First Light Movies-funded Round and Round. None of the 16-18 year olds on the programme have re-offended >> News
For 6 years The Video College worked with the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea’s Youth Offending Team (YOT) on a ground-breaking, crime prevention project with 10-14 year olds at risk of re-offending. Chance to Change was highly successful in improving school attendance, preventing re-offending and decreasing referrals back to the Youth Offending Team by the police. It explored bullying, coping with school, relationships with teachers, peers and parents, drugs, crime and the implications of re-offending. Because the videos were made by the young people themselves, it gave them a real insight into how these issues affected their lives. And that there were alternatives to what they were doing.
