“It helped me get a good understanding of the industry and what i have to do to get further.”
With the proliferation of media studies courses, an increasing number of young people are competing for employment in the industry. It has a glamorous image and is a highly competitive field in which to get a job. It’s no doddle, that’s why we offer a structured, production-based training to industry standards.
Our training programme is planned and run by our Director of Production Training, who worked at the BBC for over 20 years, and we have on hand a pool of industry professionals with similar experience.
In April 2004, we gained approval from Skillset, the Sector Skills Council for the Audio-Visual Industries, as one of five Industry Training Providers nationally. That means all our training is to industry standards, meeting the benchmark of assessment and quality control.
We realise that not all students will go on to work in the media – some may go on to further education or training, some may use their skills in different areas of employment – but all will have learnt invaluable skills to enable them to function in the work place; the necessity of time keeping and the ability to work independently while being part of a team.
When we set up The Video College we were determined that its formal training would be to industry standard and be easily available to all London’s diverse communities. That’s why we sought advice from, amongst many people, Dinah Caine, Chief Executive of Skillset, the Sector Skills Council for the Audio-Visual Industries. She set us on the path to obtaining, with the help of Film London, accreditation for our training. Both organisations still continue to advise us, alongside our network of industry players.
